Last Minute Mini Babymoon

I truly have Southwest Airlines to thank for our New Year’s weekend getaway/babymoon. My husband recently qualified for the Southwest companion pass. (Which means for the entire next year I can fly anywhere with him on Southwest for FREE!) And, on top of the companion pass qualification he was only 180 points from the next level of A List Preferred. So the week of Christmas we were discussing options for him to get 180 SW points.  This essentially meant he needed to take a flight by December 31st. We were spending Christmas with his family in NC and there was an option for him to fly down and I would drive (we would both drive home together). But then we had an idea… since our New Year’s plans were still up in the air we decided to look into a quick weekend away. Knowing I love Maine, my husband suggested Portland and I was sold! There was no convincing needed when you consider lobster, shopping, possibly snow and a fun weekend away with your best friend/husband/soulmate and now baby daddy. (Little side note: We have been to Portland, ME together once (in 2010), while we were dating to attend my sister’s wedding!)

We booked our flights, found a great deal on a rental car and hotel just outside the city and decide to go!

Monitoring the weather leading up to our departure it was going to be cold and they had just had a few inches of snow! I had to start planning my New England Baby Bump style immediately since I did not have much time in between trips. I knew we would be walking around a good bit and that called for layers… lots of layers. So… naturally I went for boots, vests, plaid and FUR!

day one: new year’s eve

We arrived in Portland late Saturday morning.  My main objective, once settled with the rental car and hotel, was lunch! A few locals working at the hotel suggested Pat’s Pizza… I mentioned I was looking for a lobster roll and they said Pat’s everything! And they sure did! Pat’s had all of my favorite New England treats: lobster rolls, cape cod chips, root beer from Maine and homemade whoopie pies!!! After lunch we went back to the hotel to relax… I needed to nap if I was going to stay up to ring in the New Year. I planned my favorite outfit for this evening… seeing as it was  New Year’s Eve. I wore H&M maternity jeans, handmade boots from Malibu Cowboy, Anthropologie Blazer, Aritzia Scarf, phenomenal feather earrings and fur sling clutch from Buylevard.  We had a relaxing dinner at Old Port Sea Grill where I ate a lobster roll again, then had a few drinks at Bull Feeney’s (local Irish pub) before finishing our evening in the hotel room to watch the ball drop. Hard to believe 2017 is here and even harder to believe soon we will be a family of three!

day two: new year’s day

We always like to support small businesses, especially when traveling.  We seek out the local eats and boutiques.  We did a little research on the way to Maine and had a small list of local hot spots we wanted to check out.  One of those being The Holy Donut. Starting off 2017 and heading to the donut shop, pregnant or not, did not seem like the best idea so we made an agreement with ourselves we could eat donuts for breakfast if we went for a hike/walk afterward. Unfortunately, when we arrived at The Holy Donut they were closed for New Years Day but we got lucky because right around the corner was another local spot…Tony’s Donut Shop. They had a great variety of donuts, pastries and breads all baked fresh right there in the store. After breakfast we headed to the Portland Headlight to walk around and get some fresh air.  It was a beautiful brisk morning with lot of snow on the ground. Seeing as I was 8 months pregnant and we wore sneakers instead of snow boots we were pretty limited in our exploration due to unplowed paths.  But the scenery was amazing nonetheless and we did get to explore along the coastline.

After hanging out at the Portland Headlight we headed back to the hotel to get ready for the rest of our day.  My sister and her husband were meeting us for lunch at the very popular Duckfat restaurant. After seeing how snowy the grounds were at the Portland Headlight I decided I needed to wear my Sorel snow boots for the afternoon. Paired with black H&M maternity jeans, Under Armour Coldgear, Anthropologie jacket with fur collar, vest from Target and large Marc Jacobs bag to hold all the goodies I might purchase from the local shops.  Later that evening for dinner I swapped a few things out and wore black tall Uggs, buffalo plaid shirt and bag.

day three: day after new year’s day

Unfortunately, most of the shops in the heart of Old Port (Portland) were closed on New Years Day.  Thoughtfully I had anticipated this and we booked our flight home for the evening on the 2nd so we could make sure I had plenty of shopping time in the city. That morning we decided to splurge again and give The Holy Donut another try but called first to make sure they were open.  Their donuts were AMAZING!!!!!  They have a handful of boutique donut locations in Portland and specialize in healthy donuts.  No, seriously, a healthy donut!  They use as many all natural and local ingredients as possible. The basis of the donut is potatoes…mashed Maine potatoes.  If you are ever in the Portland, ME area I highly recommend them. I will say if you are looking or expecting light and fluffy donuts these are not it… they are similar to cake or old fashioned donuts and yum, yum, yum!
The weather was still cold, but above freezing.  Just enough for the snow to start to melt.  For our final day in Portland I wore maternity jeans (of course I can’t fit into other pants now at 8 months pregnant), my handmade fur boots, Under Armour Coldgear shirt, denim shirt and fur vest.  What’s funny about this vest is that my mom bought it for me years ago, but it was always too big.  I loved it and I sort of have an extensive collection of vests (along with other items but that is for another post) so I kept it.  And I am glad I did because now it fits perfectly over my baby bump and I  can even zip it up!  My plan for the day was to swing into my must-see stores and then just shop and explore.  First stop was Alaina Marie and then Sea Bags.  Here are a few of my favorite items from their stores!

 I am not sure if our trip qualifies for a spontaneous weekend away since we had two weeks notice but I can say with 100% confidence it is the most spontaneous we have ever been with a trip.  And now that we have the Southwest companion pass I am hoping we plan a lot more of these next year with our little guy in tow.
