Sunday’s Style Post coming to you on Monday! Why? Because I had one heck of an amazing week/weekend and I’m pooped! I had all the intentions of blogging last night but when I put Kade down for bed I fell asleep too… Oops! So here I am, a day late sharing with you some style inspiration for the upcoming horse races. The first Saturday of every May is the Kentucky Derby which kicks off the Triple Crown series! Coincidentally, this year’s first Saturday also happens to be May 5th … Cinco Day Mayo!!! So if you were looking for a reason to get out of the house and celebrate something this weekend now you have two!!
Sadly, I won’t be attending the Derby in person but it is pretty high on my bucket list. Until then I’ll be sipping my mint juleps in style from afar! Usually I would like to host a Derby viewing party however due to a prior commitment a party didn’t work out this year. We are thinking we might head to Mt. Washington Tavern for their viewing party. There certainly will not be a shortage of places to watch the races in Baltimore. The city tends to celebrate all three since we host the second leg of the series, the Preakness Stakes. What I especially love about Mt. Washington Tavern besides the yummy food, delicious drinks, and fun atmosphere is the pride they have for Maryland’s horse racing heritage all year long. But especially during the Triple Crown! MWT will be hosting “dress to impress” viewing parties for each race and offering a custom menu May-June with specialty race inspired drinks and appetizers.
When I think about the Derby I think elegant and preppy. Dresses and suits in seersucker, florals, stripes, and bright colors… for both Men and Women. No matter what you decide to wear, your look is all about your headwear! The past few years I have really been into the fascinator scene but love big beautiful hats! I think my head is just a little small and I have trouble finding hats that fit just right so I tend to wear fascinators. When it comes to dressing for the derby, I like to start with a statement piece which is usually my headwear. But sometimes can be my dress. If you are actually attending the race you will most like be walking on the grass/dirt at some point and may want to consider the length of your attire and your footwear… the same should be considered for bar floors and house parties! I personally prefer to wear a dress with a short to mid-calf length. This year I created a look with a two piece gingham dress with blue seersucker accents.
