Style Files | How to Find the Perfect Pair of Denim Shorts

Each of us should have that ride-or-die, I’ve got your back, ready to take on summer pair of denim shorts in our collection. But how do you find the perfect pair of denim shorts when they seem to be a dime a dozen? And you literally have to try on dozens?!

As a recovering denim short battler I have compiled a few tips that I think you will find helpful. As well as a hand picked selection of classic and trendy styles just for you!

DENIM SHORT BASICS

Okay, let’s get started on the basics! There are three main things to consider when selecting the perfect pair of denim shorts. WASH. RISE. STYLE/LENGTH. I could also argue price because you can buy denim shorts for $20, $120 or over $220.

STYLE TIP: If you find a pair of denim shorts above your price range and they feel like butter, hug your booty in all the right places and make you feel like you never want to take them off… BUY THEM! You won’t regret it!

WASH

When it comes to wash I recommend choosing a denim wash that works for all your everyday needs. Remember these are your wear me all summer long and take me on lots of adventures shorts. So you want to make sure the wash you select works with most of your wardrobe and personal preference. If darker denim is your thing try to test them out or read reviews before making the final purchase. Some dark denim washes may bleed onto your clothes and handbags during wear. (This is often avoided with a pre wash. )

RISE

There are basically two rises to consider when choosing your denim shorts: hi-rise and low rise. When you’re trying on either rise be sure to give them the “sit down test”. You want to make sure you can comfortably sit down for more than five minutes. There is nothing more uncomfortable than sitting for a few hours in denim that hugs you in all the wrong places!

STYLE/LENGTH

The style and length selection of finding the perfect pair of denim shorts is the toughest. I coupled these together because the length is a style but then there is all the details that create style too!

Lengths typically run in long, classic, short, and cheeky but are not necessarily consistent in name or measurement from brand to brand. Here is a good guide is to follow regarding denim short inseam measurements.

The style of denim shorts would include esthetic details like ripped or distressed areas, frayed, rolled or cuffed bottoms, pleats, and built in belts. The selects below include a variety of styles and a few novelty ones too! Novelty are trendy… usually stylish for a season or two.

Thankfully they are back in stock this season so I can snag another pair! Here I styled my fav denim shorts with a dress/kimono and lace bandeau. You can also find me wearing these with a white tee on the weekend or paired with a fleece and boots around an evening campfire!
