What to Wear for Outdoor Activities | LOTD #18

One thing that isn’t canceled this summer is Mother Nature! Spending time outside is the best thing we can do for ourselves and our families! If you aren’t used to spending a lot of time outside you might be wondering What to Wear for Outdoor Activities. In this week’s Look of the Day series I styled just that! Outfits that can be worn for a variety of outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, picnicking, kayaking, fishing and many more!

There are a few important things to consider when deciding what to wear for outdoor activities. The sun, weather, insects, and difficulty of your activity. Depending on each of these will also depend on the type of outfit you should wear and/or carry with you.

THE SUN

I’m pretty sure we all know how important it is to wear and continuously apply sunscreen. There may be some instances such as fishing where you would like an extra level of sun protection. Many performance apparel companies offer clothing made from UPF fibers. Essentially this means your shirt will provide you with 30+ UPF protection. These garments have a special UPF hang tag denoting the protection.

WEATHER

Weather can be the most unpredictable element to plan for when spending time outdoors. My recommendation is to have a packable poncho or rain jacket in your pack and a long sleeve shirt or sweatshirt. Temperatures tend to drop dramatically on the water or in the mountains during the evening and warmer clothing can definitely come in handy for the trek home or back to the car.

INSECTS

Spending time outdoors in synonymous with bugs and lots of them! We have found Thermacell products to work the best in repelling bugs. We have also tried bug repellent wrist bands and waist clips which seem to work well. Performance compression products are also beneficial to wear which deter ticks and other bugs from getting through to your skin.

LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY

Before attempting a new outdoor activities research the requirements and difficulty levels. If trails are label moderate to strenuous you will want to make sure you have the proper gear such as hiking boots, plenty of water, and possible walking/hiking sticks.
