Family Spring Style

Family photos hold a special place in my heart, but also in our home. Our photos become home decor, art and conversation pieces throughout our house. To capture these beautiful moments we typically schedule time with a professional photographer. However between Easter, Mother’s Day, Graduations, Weddings, Showers and Birthdays there are plenty of opportunities for spring family photos. Whether you are planning a scheduled shoot or may have the impromptu “lets grab a quick family photo while we are all dressed up” moment, it is helpful to have a family style. Especially if you plan on using these photos beyond being saved on your computer!

Here are my top three suggestions when planning your family style!

color scheme

Choosing a color scheme can be dependent upon colors you prefer to wear, matching color decor in your home {where you plan on displaying your photos} or simply colors you prefer. Once you have an idea of colors, choose your main color and then one or two accent colors. Having too many colors often becomes distracting and attention is drawn to the colors instead of the moment in the photo. Additionally, consider your background; woods, forest, beach, studio, home… you want your colors to compliment, not blend in with your surroundings.

coordination

I LOVE matchy matchy, but within reason! If you have a family of five and choose navy as your main color steer clear of all family members wearing a navy top.  Mix it up a bit… maybe a navy dress, a few in navy pants, a couple in navy tops and then use your accent color(s) to finish the look. {The neon orange look and navy and yellow below is a great example of this} Don’t be scared to incorporate prints and patterns… the same style tips apply. Complimenting is key! For example, in our first look below, the boys coordinate with gingham tops and khaki pants while my style is in the same color scheme but compliments with a slight contrast in the striped dress.

props

Props can be fun to incorporate, especially if you have kids in the photos!  Plus they might help keep their attention and smiling faces smiling for the pictures.  Think bubbles, cotton candy, balloons, silly hats, flowers or something special or unique to your family!

upcoming style

Currently working on our Easter style which now may be our Spring Style for later in the season. We are heading to Boston for Easter and I have a feeling we are heading into Winter, not Spring.  I may need to adjust our style a bit, but currently I have mint on my mind!
