Recently I had the opportunity to treat my Momma to a Mother Daughter girl’s day at About Faces! My Mom is the kind of Mom who is your very best friend. She keeps your secrets, picks you up when you fall, is your constant cheerleader, loves you endlessly, puts you first, picks the beans out of your chili cause you don’t like them, fans you with a Kohl’s flier for 15 minutes straight while you are giving birth, and agrees to having pictures taken during girls day cause she loves you that much! Usually she tends to be more on the quieter side, but mess with her girls, or little Moose, and watch out! She becomes a fierce lioness ready to go to battle for her cubs. So she is basically the nicest, most loving, can-be bada** when needed, AMAZING Mom!
In case you can’t tell, I am pretty close, dang near attached at the hip, with my Mom. We talk on the phone almost every day, text message and DM. Yep, that’s right, my Mom is on Instagram! I lived away from home three times in my life: one semester of college, three years in Los Angeles, and after I got married. When I lived in LA, the longest we went without seeing each other was three months. When I moved back to MD, I lived at home for several years before Spencer and I got married. While I no longer live at home, we are still only 30 minutes away from each other.
We Needed Some Girl Time
Living close you’d think we see each other often. But sadly, we don’t. Why, you might ask… well, LIFE! It’s an absolutely terrible excuse. One that I am working on overcoming, and our mother daughter girl’s day is just the start! When I lived at home we would regularly go to the nail salon together, but I can’t tell you the last time we have. It’s been years! A few weeks back I was telling my Mom about the couple’s massage Spencer and I had at About Faces . We got to talking about going together and as a result, I made a mental note to make this happen! Honestly, I thought we would have gone by now but that terrible excuse of life kept getting in the way.
My Mom has off of work on Fridays and I have a significant amount of vacation time. So I took off and we finally got to have our mother daughter girl’s day last week! It was so much fun and the About Faces team was nothing short of AWESOME! I decided to sign us up for manicures and makeovers since we both had holiday weekend plans and we were also going out that night.
When we arrived, the About Faces team was waiting for us with rosé and snacks! We started with Sierra and Marie giving us both Classic manicures. Neither one of us have had our nails professionally done lately and boy did we need it! Our cuticles were dry, and our nails were brittle. I went with a festive red called “Tell Me About It Stud” from the OPI Grease collection paired with the trendy gold glitter on my ring fingers and my Mom chose a shimmery light wine color. After our manicures it was a night and day difference. Even today, five days later, my nails still look great!
From Manis to Makeovers
After our manis we met Jalen and Corrine for makeovers. Getting your makeup done can be a little intimidating, but it’s a lot of fun to be pampered. And I find it really relieves the stress of getting ready yourself if you have a big event or dinner party to attend. The girls asked us a few questions about what type of look we were going for and I could tell they were really listening! They wanted to make sure we each looked and felt fabulous after our makeover. My favorite product they used was Celestial Powder by Kevin Aucoin and my Mom loved the Jane Iredale Cosmetics.
Jalen gave me a holiday eye with a little glitz and cluster faux lashes while my mom went for a daytime glam look. It has been a few years since my Mom has had her makeup professionally done. I think the last time was a family wedding. It isn’t moms style to openly rave about how she looked. But both Spencer and my Dad gave her tons of compliments, and of course, I did too!
I, on the other hand, get my makeup done regularly. Sometimes I love it and sometimes I don’t, but when I don’t its usually because I didn’t speak up. My makeup on this day was one of those that I loved! Do you ever love your makeup so much you wish you could see everyone you know or stay out longer? Or at least not take it off and save it for tomorrow? If you know that feeling, that’s how I felt!
After our makeup Erik gave me a quick hair refresh. We had been talking curling techniques and he offered to show me. He uses a forward and backward technique where you alternate curling each curl toward your head or away. And he said the trick was always curl away from you face!
